Dermaplaning: Is this beauty trend just another industry fad, or is it a beneficial, non-invasive treatment to assist those trying to achieve clear and healthy skin? We’ll be going over some common misconceptions about dermaplaning and how it can benefit those looking to maintain bright and healthy skin .

What is dermaplaning?

Facial dermaplaning is the use of a medical grade scalpel to remove the top most layer of your skin (epidermis), along with any hairs or buildup that may be present. While this may sound similar to shaving, it is actually more complex and should honestly be left to the professionals.

The removal of the top most layer of skin acts as a special exfoliation technique that works best when combined with a customized facial treatment.

The benefits of dermaplaning

The benefits of this process fall mainly on its ability to exfoliate the skin, removing any dead or dry skin that can cause your face to look dull or unmoisturized. In addition, dermaplaning can assist in the reduction of uneven skin tone, acne scarring, and any fine lines or discoloration due to sun damaged skin.

Another benefit of dermaplaning is the removal of the peach fuzz on your face - also known as vellus hairs. Shaving alone may not be able to remove all of the vellus hairs due to their size, so dermaplaning assists in achieving that perfect soft and smooth skin texture.

Dermaplaning as part of a facial

As mentioned previously, dermaplaning works best when it is used in addition to a facial treatment. When the layer of dead skin and hair is removed, it allows the ingredients in your personalized facial treatment to more easily penetrate the fresh layer of skin.

While dermaplaning is frequently paired with other facial treatments , it is important to discuss what types of facials you’re interested in prior to completing the dermaplaning process as not all treatments are compatible with each other. To avoid irritation, or negative reactions, always consult a professional first.

What are some common misconceptions about dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning can come with its own misconceptions. It is important to know what is true and what can be misleading or completely inaccurate before booking your appointment.

Hair will grow back darker

Regularly discussed is the idea that when the hair is removed in the process of dermaplaning, it will regrow darker and thicker than it was before. This is not the case. Most of the hair growth on your face is known as vellus hair. Vellus hair is short, thin, and light in color and will remain that way regardless of how frequently it is removed.

Hair will be thicker than before

Similar to the concern that your hair will grow back darker, there is also concern that your vellus hairs will grow back thicker than they were prior to the treatment. Again, this is not the case. It is simply not possible for the hairs on your face to grow back thicker than they were due to dermaplaning.

Dermaplaning is the same thing as shaving

While dermaplaning may provide some of the same benefits that shaving might (hair removal), they certainly are not the same. Shaving is the use of multiple razors gliding across the skin to remove hair. Dermaplaning is an exfoliating treatment that uses a surgical grade scalpel combined with precision to remove the top most layer of skin. Shaving has no exfoliating properties and should not be removing any part of your skin.

What to expect from a dermaplaning appointment

Here at Mixed Esthetics , we understand that and hope that providing as much information as possible will prepare you and soothe any anxiety that you may have. Knowledge is power!

Preparing and the process of your facial

Before your dermaplaning appointment, it is important to step away from at-home exfoliation. Try to give your skin at least 2 to 3 days without exfoliating before coming into your appointment. Additionally, try to ensure that there's no cuts, breakouts, or skin irritations actively present on your face. If your skin does have some irritation going on, it would be best to talk to your esthetician prior to your appointment – you both can discuss what to do and how best to move forward. If your skin seems good to go, just make sure you stay hydrated and come to your appointment with a clean face!

Once you’ve made it to your appointment, your esthetician will walk you through any questions you may still have before starting. When you are ready, your face will be cleaned and then your technician will begin the dermaplaning process.

A vajacial treatment is basically a facial for your vulva that includes the bikini and outer labia area. While the skin around your vulva and on your pubic bone is different from your facial skin, it's still thin and sensitive compared to the thicker skin around your body. It deserves the care, attention, and hydrating products, just like anywhere else!
